What Is Mini Lobster Season?

Mini Lobster Season is a two-day window that typically occurs on the last Wednesday and Thursday in July. During this brief period, recreational fishermen are allowed to catch spiny lobsters before the commercial season begins in August. This creates an exhilarating rush as participants try to maximize their catch within the limited timeframe. The annual mini lobster season in the Florida Keys has become an eagerly awaited event for many, providing a unique opportunity for both locals and visitors to engage in a time-honored Florida tradition.

About the Spiny Lobster

The Florida spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, is a fascinating creature that inhabits the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. These lobsters are easily distinguishable by their long, spined antennae and the characteristic two large spots on their tails. They inhabit crevices and caverns around coral reefs and other hard-bottomed areas, often hiding from predators with their forward-pointing spines.

The lifecycle of spiny lobsters starts with their spawning from March through August. Female lobsters carry bright orange eggs on their undersides, which turn brown and hatch, releasing larvae carried by currents to shallow areas. As they mature, they migrate from these nursery areas offshore to reefs, where they continue to grow and congregate. It takes about two years for a spiny lobster to reach the legal size for harvesting. In a typical year, recreational harvests amount to 1.5 to 2 million pounds of spiny lobster meat.
